Kongsberg Automotive

The context

Kongsberg Automotive is a global organisation which provides world-class products to the vehicle industry. Its Normanton plant opened in 1979 and today, it specialises in fluid transfer products such as PFTE and nylon formed hoses.

Kongsberg wanted to upgrade the data and power infrastructure throughout the general office areas and production areas to enable high-speed data connections via new central and sub-cabinets’ data centres for distribution across the whole site.

GRW designed and presented a full specification and implementation plan which offered the complete solution that Kongsberg was looking for.

The project

With the plan fully approved, the GRW team set about installing new copper Cat.6 cabling to 350 workstations, PCs and devices across an extensive production and office area. The area was divided into zones, with 4km of high-speed fibre optic cabling interconnecting central and sub cabinets across the entire Kongsberg site.

A one-hour power backup in the event of any power failure was built in to every new work station assigned to essential users, enabling production continuity at all times. All general office users were provided with data and power cabling encased in new dado trunking.

A major project, seamlessly delivered

Kongsberg’s busy Normanton site now has a state-of-the-art fibre infrastructure that satisfies all of its data and power needs. This resilient new system, which is 100% documented and certified, was fully commissioned with zero downtime, allowing all Kongsberg’s daily operations to continue uninterrupted. The high-speed network incorporates valuable production applications and its UPS power backup ensures that key operations can continue as normal should a power cut affect the site.

Kongsberg’s IT Delivery Manager, Glen Robson, comments, “GRW’s project management and implementation of this major fit out was highly professional. This is a large site with over 350 users, but GRW controlled everything without any disruption at all. We’ll certainly be working with GRW on our Phase Three Extension Plan in the near future.
